A Fun Packed Saturday in the North East!
Written by Rachel Evans, Pearl Owl, 81st Newcastle Brownies
Be prepared, I’m going to write the word ‘fun’ a LOT in this article! Saturday 1st July 2023 was a very special day up here in Newcastle. Gathering at Hadrian School, groups of Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from across the toon were treated to a fun filled day to mark summer being here! It was also the county’s first large scale event since COVID.
Each group was treated to individual sessions which were either educational, promoting mindfulness, or just really fun! All arranged by a small team led by Helen Thompson, Newcastle County Commissioner, sessions such as trampolining, arts and crafts, gender discussion with Peer Educators Rebecca and Amy, meditation in a yurt, a treasure hunt and even a petting zoo were just some of the activities that the Girlguiding crew were treated to. There was even an appearance from Teenie Bear who loved seeing all the girls smiling faces. As if that wasn’t enough excitement, it was all topped off with a massive dance party!
Entertainers Ashley and Animals about town were instrumental in making the day a success – Animals about Town brought along sheep, goats, rabbits, and even baby guinea pigs to cuddle with the girls, and Ashley got them up and moving to dances such as the cha cha slide – many happy faces were seen amongst a few tired ones after 6 whole hours of non-stop fun!
The staff at Hadrian School were also incredible: guiding the girls around the school, (pun intended!) and teaching them how to trampoline in a way that I’m sure the health and safety board thoroughly approve of! Andy, who was manning the trampolines, said about Helen’s organisation of the day “I’ve worked here with the school for years and this is the most organised and fun day we’ve ever had- you are all the best!”
All the girls and leaders had the best day! It was a day filled with laughter, bonding, and cherished memories for everyone involved.
